Three Weeks and Counting…

We had our final appointment at Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital today before James’ open heart surgery on September 13. James has not put on much weight over the past two weeks. Maybe an ounce. Basically our doctor said that we’ve done as much intervention as we can and now we just need to sustain him until surgery. He is still on the chart in terms of weight (he is in the 5th percentile) and he is not malnourished. He assured us that James is not in any imminent danger and that he will be fine to wait another three weeks for surgery. In the meantime we have two main goals. 1. We need to keep James well fed and 2. We need to protect James from getting sick. If he gets sick we will have to postpone surgery. Specifically this means James cannot be around any kids under the age of 8 and around anybody who is sick. So we will be keeping him pretty sheltered between now and surgery.

We will head to OHSU on September 12 for a full day of pre-op appointments. James will have one final echocardiogram while under anesthesia so that he is completely still. He will also have one final EKG and chest x-ray. After that we will have a consultation with the surgeon, get a tour of the ICU, and then move into the Ronald McDonald house, which will be our home for a few days. On September 13 James will have his full repair. They said the goal is for us to be home 5 days after surgery, granted that everything goes okay.

We are praying that James does not get bumped from this date. Looking forward to being on the other side of this! Thanks for your prayers and support.

  1. You’re rounding third! The waiting is the worst! You have the world’s best cardio care for infants and the God of creation in your boat. Feel blessed. God loves you like crazy! James will be so vibrant soon

  2. Besides praying for James, how can we be lifting up you and Julie?
