Update on James

Yesterday we went to Doernbecher’s Childrens Hospital at OHSU to meet with a pediatric cardiologist. It has been determined that James has a few things wrong with his heart, including a fairly large ventrical septal defect. A VSD is a hole between the right and left ventricles of the heart. This was the preliminary diagnosis we had been given at St. Johns, but we did not really know what this meant until we met with the specialist yesterday. While some septal defects are minor and can heal on there own, this particular one is quite large and is located in such a way that it will not heal naturally. So James will need to undergo heart surgery this fall, when he is between 4 and 6 months. For now, the plan is a medication that reduces the fluid in his lungs (resulting from backwards flow in his… heart) and possibly modified feeding to help him gain weight and thrive. Our cardiologist is very positive that a surgery will be successful.

We will also need to be careful to shelter James from unwanted sickness. So James will not be able to be as visible and active at church functions until after the surgery. We will try to keep pictures posted instead!

While this is not the news we were hoping to hear, it is helpful to know what is going on. It was the uncertainty that really wore us down earlier this week. The specialist at OHSU was very knowledgeable and spent over an hour answering all of our questions. James is not in any immediate danger right now. With proper feeding and medication he will do fine. Once he has the surgery the doctor thinks this will probably be a permanent fix and he will be fully healed. The surgery is very routine and the success rate is very high.

We continue to covet your prayers as we move forward in the next weeks and months. Thanks for your love and support!
